MarketTally — S&P 500 Stock Screener & Scoring

1. What We Collect. MarketTally collects only what's necessary: username, hashed password (never stored in plain text), watchlist tickers, portfolio entries (ticker, price, shares, notes), alert settings, and notification email if provided. We do not collect your real name, address, financial account numbers, brokerage credentials, or government IDs.

2. How We Store It. All data is stored in an encrypted database on a secured server. Passwords use PBKDF2-SHA256 hashing. Session cookies are HTTP-only, secure, and SameSite-protected. We do not use tracking cookies, analytics scripts, or advertising pixels.

3. What We Don't Do. We do not sell, rent, share, or disclose your data to any third party. We do not serve ads. We do not track your browsing outside MarketTally. We do not use your data for marketing beyond providing the service.

4. Third-Party Data. Market data is retrieved server-side from Yahoo Finance and public sources. Your identity is not shared with these providers. The only outbound data is email alert notifications sent to the address you configure.

5. Your Rights. You may at any time: (a) Export all your data as JSON via Settings. (b) Delete your account and all data permanently via Settings. (c) Change your password. These rights apply regardless of location, in the spirit of GDPR, CCPA, and similar laws.

6. Data Retention. Data is retained while your account is active. Deletion removes all data immediately and permanently.

7. Security. We use HTTPS, hashed passwords, HTTP-only cookies, rate limiting, and input validation. No system is perfectly secure, but we follow industry best practices.

8. Changes. Updates to this policy will be posted here. Continued use constitutes acceptance. Last updated: June 2026.

MarketTally does not guarantee the accuracy, completeness, or timeliness of any data, score, signal, or analysis. Data may be delayed, incomplete, or contain errors. Historical backtest results are hypothetical, do not represent actual trading, and past performance does not guarantee future results.

4. Your Responsibility. You are solely responsible for your own investment decisions. You should consult with a qualified, licensed financial professional before making any investment. You understand that investing involves risk, including the possible loss of principal, and you accept full responsibility for any trades you make.

5. Limitation of Liability. To the maximum extent permitted by law, MarketTally and its operators shall not be liable for any direct, indirect, incidental, consequential, or punitive damages arising from your use of the platform, including but not limited to investment losses, lost profits, or data loss.

6. Indemnification. You agree to indemnify and hold harmless MarketTally and its operators from any claims, damages, or expenses arising from your use of the platform or your violation of these terms.

7. Data and Privacy. MarketTally stores your account credentials (password is hashed, never stored in plain text), watchlist, portfolio entries, and alert settings. This data is used solely to provide the service and is not sold to third parties. You may request deletion of your account and data by contacting the administrator.

8. Modifications. MarketTally reserves the right to modify these terms at any time. Continued use of the platform after changes constitutes acceptance of the updated terms.

9. Governing Law. These terms are governed by the laws of the State of Oregon, United States. Any disputes shall be resolved through binding arbitration in the State of Oregon.

10. Acceptance. By creating an account or continuing to use MarketTally, you acknowledge that you have read, understood, and agree to these terms.

Welcome to MarketTally

Here's a quick walkthrough of what you can do.

1Score any stock

Type a ticker (like NVDA or AAPL) in the Scorer tab and hit Analyze. You'll get a 0-100 composite score based on 7 weighted factors: technicals, momentum, fundamentals, volume, value, analyst consensus, and news sentiment. Each factor is clickable for details.

2Read the chart

The Chart tab shows price history with toggleable overlays: moving averages, VWAP, Bollinger Bands, and support/resistance levels. Toggle sub-panels for RSI, MACD, volume, and performance vs SPY or your stock's sector ETF. Hover for detailed tooltips. Past earnings dates appear as vertical markers.

3Screen the market

The Screener scans the S&P 500 and ranks stocks by composite score. Filter by sector, setup type, price range, market cap, and RSI. Results are pre-cached nightly so they load instantly. Click "Rescan live" if you want fresh data.

4Track your trades

Use the Portfolio tab to log positions with entry notes and setup tags (your trade journal). When you close a trade, the exit is recorded with P&L. The History panel shows all your past trades, win rate, and realized returns. You'll also see sector exposure and correlation warnings if your positions overlap.

5Set alerts & backtest

The Alerts tab lets you set price-above/below alerts that fire automatically, even via email when you're not online. Scan your watchlist for upcoming earnings. The Backtest tab tests the same 7-factor scoring model against historical data so you can see how it performed on any ticker.

You're all set

Start by scoring a ticker you're interested in. Just head to the Scorer tab and type a symbol. Your Watchlist saves tickers across sessions so you can track them over time. Remember: MarketTally is a research tool, not investment advice. Always do your own due diligence.

What am I looking at?

When candlesticks are shown, a green body means price closed higher than it opened that day, and a red body means it closed lower. The thin "wick" lines above and below each body show that day's full high-to-low range.

The orange and purple lines are the 20-day and 50-day moving averages, smoothed-out trend lines. Price trading above both is often read as an uptrend, below both as a downtrend, and some traders watch for one line crossing the other as a sign the trend may be changing.

The dashed green, teal, and red lines are your Entry, Target, and Stop values from the fields above, if set.

Score and setup guide

Scores use the same 0-100 system as the Scorer tab (BULLISH 65+, NEUTRAL 45-64, BEARISH below). Setup types are rule-based reads on price action: Breakout (pushing through a recent high on rising volume), Pullback to MA (uptrend easing back near its 20/50-day average), Momentum (strong recent move while above both averages), Reversal (oversold with early bullish signal). Automated filters only, not trade signals.

Options are contracts, not shares. They're more complex and carry more risk than buying a stock — it's possible to lose your entire premium. This is a plain-English primer on the terms, not a suggestion to trade them. If any of this is unfamiliar, that's usually a sign to learn more before risking money.

What is an option?

A contract giving you the right — but not the obligation — to buy or sell 100 shares of a stock at a set price, before a set date. You pay a fee (the "premium") for that right. Two basic types: calls and puts.

Call option

The right to buy a stock at a fixed price ("strike"). Buyers of calls are betting the stock will go up — if it rises well above the strike, the call gains value.

Put option

The right to sell a stock at a fixed price. Buyers of puts are betting the stock will go down, or are protecting (hedging) shares they already own.

Strike price

The fixed price at which the option lets you buy (call) or sell (put). The relationship between the strike and the current stock price determines much of the option's value.

Expiration date

Options expire. After the expiration date the contract is worthless if it hasn't paid off. Shorter-dated options are cheaper but riskier; they need the move to happen sooner.

Premium

The price you pay to buy the option. It's the most a buyer can lose. One contract usually covers 100 shares, so a $1.50 premium costs $150.

Implied volatility (IV)

The market's estimate of how much the stock might move, expressed as a percentage. Higher IV = pricier options, because bigger expected swings make the contract more valuable. IV often spikes before earnings or big news.

Open interest

The total number of contracts currently open at a given strike. Think of it as how crowded that contract is — higher open interest generally means more liquidity (easier to buy and sell).

Volume

How many contracts traded today. When volume is unusually high versus open interest, it can signal fresh interest or a notable bet — though it never tells you who's right.

Put/call ratio

Puts traded divided by calls traded. A high ratio (more puts) is often read as bearish or cautious sentiment; a low ratio (more calls) as bullish. It's a sentiment gauge, not a prediction.

Expected move

A rough range, derived from implied volatility, of how far the stock might travel by a given expiration. It's a probability estimate — not a forecast of direction.

In / at / out of the money

"In the money" means the option already has intrinsic value (e.g. a call whose strike is below the current price). "At the money" means the strike is near the price. "Out of the money" means it has no intrinsic value yet — only potential.

About this backtest: This simulates the same 7-factor composite scoring model used by the live Scorer. Technical, momentum, and volume factors are recomputed walk-forward at each bar from price history only (no look-ahead). Fundamentals, value, analyst, and sentiment factors use current values held constant across the window — point-in-time history isn't available for those sources, so results can be flattered or penalized by data the model wouldn't have had at the time. Entry triggers when the composite score hits the BUY threshold (65 for stocks, 60 for ETFs); exit on AVOID signal, stop-loss (-8%), take-profit (+20%), or 20-bar max hold. The longer the window, the further those held-constant factors drift from what was true at the time, so treat 1y/2y runs as rougher. Results are indicative, based on a limited trade sample — not a rigorous backtest, not a prediction, and not investment advice.
